Incunabola

Regiomontanus Iohannes, Ephemerides 1484-1506, carta 1 recto, ritaglio

The collection includes the 22 incunabula kept in the libraries of the University of Florence.  These are editions of Latin texts – medical works, statutes of Italian municipalities, literary and scientific texts – particularly significant since they are often preserved in very few, or unique, copies.
The incunabula belong to the historical nuclei of the libraries, among which the archive of the Hospital of Santa Maria Nova of the Biomedical Library, the archive of the Bar of Florence of the Social Sciences Library, the Bardi Archive of the Humanities Library.

The splendid incunabulum Ephemerides (1484) by the German astronomer Regiomontanus, founder of the first European observatory in Nuremberg, and Ruralia commoda by Pietro de’ Crescenzi (1486) belong to the precious and substantial collection of the books of the Palatine Library, first collected by the Medici and then by the Lorena.

In the field of law, two important examples of ius proprium are the Statutes of Verona (1475) and Milan (1480), with the relative Tabula (1482), which are significant evidence of the process of affirmation of municipal autonomy in the Middle Ages. The latter, in addition to the rediscovery in the universities of the great tradition of Roman law which becomes the instrument of ius commune, defined their own systems and rules of civil coexistence.

In the context of the statutory publication, the rich collection of Statutes Manuscripts should also be mentioned.
