Over the last ten years, the Department of Architecture in Florence has offered students a workshop titled Photography as a Tool for Urban Investigation. We began by considering photography as a means to catalog, document, and preserve, but simultaneously as a form of expression. In this sense, we proposed it to students as a form of creative description—an interpretation guided by a specific intent, even if sometimes undeclared. Photography inherently possesses a direct, seemingly (and partially) spontaneous gaze, yet it is always mediated by an interpretive approach; it therefore serves as an exceptionally effective tool for urban survey and intentional description.

This is what we proposed to our students, and these images aim to reflect part of the results. The works included here represent a small selection of those completed. We apologize to the authors who are not featured and whom we had to omit due to space constraints (though their work can be viewed in the video presentation).
