As part of Florentine Autumn 2022, the Social Sciences Library hosts Les Métamorphoses, an acoustic and visual creation for Metallophone, conceived by the French composer and artist Bastien David. The event is part of the project Beyond the walls organized by Fondazione Fabbrica Europa
The idea of this extraordinary percussion instrument, a circular keyboard with a circumference of 16 meters, was born during a trip of the same David in Myanmar, where he worked on the development of the steel blades that make up the Metallophone. The construction of the six wooden resonance boxes took place later in France, and then ended in Italy during the residence of Bastien David at Villa Medici in Rome.
Les Métamorphoses is the first opera he composed for the Metallophone and marks the birth of the group Les insectes. Five musicians - Arthur Bechet, Elisa Humanes, Morgan Laplace Mermoud, Catherine Lenert, François Vallet - who together make the 216 blades resound, creating an immersive and evocative gestural dance.
