Discovering the Social Sciences

ScienzEstate, the University of Florence's science outreach event, lands in the world of Social Sciences: an afternoon and evening dedicated to workshops, games, activities, and seminars for all ages.

The full program of the many initiatives is available online at the OpenLab website.

The Social Sciences Library will hold the following activities under the covered porch at the entrance:

5-10 pm
Discovering the Social Sciences Library
An itinerary inside the library, an encounter with history and stories about it, and "tricks" for personalizing one's books.
Target audience: everyone

5-8 pm
Photograph a woman scientist, and make her visible on the Web
Female researchers and faculty are less visible in Web searches than their male colleagues. You can help make their work more accessible by photographing them, interviewing them, and uploading the information to Wikipedia-related sites. A "photo report" on the Social Sciences campus.
Target audience: 14-18 years old

Discovering Wikipedia, the world's largest encyclopedia
How does Wikipedia work? Who are its "brothers"? What is a datum? A behind-the-scenes journey into the encyclopedia that everyone has used at least once.

Why do we read?
Prisoner students enrolled at the University of Florence answered this question, Scioglilibro illustrators translated the texts into images. The result of this collaboration is on display. And why do you read? Your answer will be illustrated "live."

The Social Sciences Library introduces itself
The table is the focal point for a range of activities: what does the Social Sciences Library do? Information, trivia, and a fun workshop: "Draw your own ex libris." Visitors of all ages can design their own ex libris by having models taken from texts and displayed on a panel briefly explaining the history and functions of ex libris.

Travel and study with Europe
The work and study opportunities offered by the European Union.
Target audience: 14-18 years old, adults

Seeds of well-being
In collaboration with the Student Uniwell Project - With mindfulness, we feel the body and take care of our emotions, feelings, and thoughts through breath, movement, slowing down, and stopping. For children, a Yoga play experience, and for adults, a mindfulness walk.
Target audience: 3-6 years old, 7-13 years old, adults

Also in the Library's Computer Room will be Run among the wikilinks, a headlong race starting from one Wikipedia entry to another, jumping from link to link.
The first to arrive wins!
